ROCHESTER CHARTER SCHOOLS TO HOLD A DAY OF ACTION & VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE; FAMILIES, STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS TO CALL ON LAWMAKERS FOR FAIR FUNDING THIS YEAR
This is the year to end the inequity that leaves Rochester charter kids with only 68 cents on the dollar compared to other public school children
Albany, NY – With budget season underway in Albany, Rochester charter schools are coming together on Tuesday, February 23 to speak with one voice to ask lawmakers to end the inequity that plagues their schools and their children.
They are calling for fair funding and an end to the inequality that leaves Rochester charter school children with only 68 cents on the dollar compared to other public school children in the city. The primary reason for this inequity is that Rochester charter schools are denied state facilities funding for their school buildings. A 2014 law gave some NYC charter schools access to this aid but left out all of the schools outside of NYC and approximately one quarter of the charters in NYC.
Parents, students and educators will be calling for an end to this inequality and will be joined by community supporters. This will also be a day of action where people will have the chance to register to vote and call state legislators.
