Mixing Football Metaphors
Paterson punts
Gov taking a pass on schools
Gov taking a pass on schools
The New York Post headline in Thursday's opinion section could read as two football metaphors. It's fair to say the sub-headline referred to something other than football, but it was still somewhat humorous, though nowhere near the "Headless Body Found in Topless Bar" variety.
The article itself (here) was by Tom Carroll, the president of the Foundation for Education Reform and Accountability and also chairman of the Brighter Choice Foundation. He pointed out that the Governor's "no position" response via a spokesperson to Assemblyman Sam Hoyt's comprehensive education reform bill was a far cry from what the state needs. This is because federal Race to the Top funds are needed and the state has done next to nothing to compete for them.
There is still time for Gov. Paterson to make education reform his agenda, especially since much of it costs nothing, and would change the subject from his all-cuts-all-the-time agenda, made necessary by the bad economy. Any reform takes leadership at the top. Other states have made reforms; so should New York.
Time is running out.
