It May Be Winter Break, But Charter Families Are Still Fighting For Fairness; Charters Denied Facilities Funding Say This is the Year to Include Their Schools in the Budget

Albany, NY – On Thursday, February 23rd, a charter school father will drop off hundreds of letters to Governor Cuomo’s office, representing charter schools from Buffalo, Rochester and New York City who have put their requests for their schools in writing. The letters are written by children, parents, and teachers asking for the Governor to include their schools in this year’s state budget by providing equity in the form of facilities aid.

Currently, 60,000 charter school children statewide are affected by a lack of public facilities funding. The gap in funding is most severe in Buffalo, which is why a Buffalo charter dad will represent the movement statewide during the letter drop-off. When a charter school is denied facilities aid it means much of the money meant for teaching and learning instead pays for buildings and maintenance.

Northeast Charter Schools Network Western New York Advocacy Manager Duncan Kirkwood, whose daughters attend a Buffalo charter school, said, “One of the most worthwhile investments we can make is in our children and our schools. Charter schools are working. You can see it in these letters. Kids talk about being safe, being loved, and learning – but their schools lack many of the resources other public schools are afforded. We hope the Governor takes a moment to read through these letters, and ultimately decides to fund all of our state’s schools fairly.”
