Charter association pens open letter to Queens lawmakers asking for public funding for school buildings
4,375 Queens public charter school children still being denied their fair share

Albany, NY – The Northeast Charter Schools Network issued an open letter to Queens' state senators and assembly members, calling on them to support the borough's charter school students in this year's state budget. Eleven of Queens' 13 charter schools do not fully benefit from the law that was passed last year providing the schools either free district space or help paying their facilities funding costs.

The letter tells Queens' state lawmakers, "4,375 Queens children need your help. They are being discriminated against. No other public school children in the state are treated the way they are."

The letter appears in this week's issue of the Queens Tribune: http://queenstribune.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Tribune-Epaper-021915.pdf

The Northeast Charter Schools Network CEO Kyle Rosenkrans said, “Queens sees some of the most overcrowded school districts in our state, but fortunately, charter schools are giving parents and children a choice when it comes to their education. The problem is, children in the majority of these charters schools don't currently receive any state facilities funding. They are being penalized because their parents made the decision to send them to a different kind of public school. That's not fair and we are calling on lawmakers to support these children and their families in this year's state budget."

About the Northeast Charter Schools Network: The Northeast Charter Schools Network is a regional advocacy organization for the more than 250 charter schools in New York and Connecticut. Its mission is to support and expand high quality charter schools in the region.
