Charter association praises New York State Senate for including building aid and funding increase for charter school children in budget proposal
Senate proposes much-needed support for charters in its “Brighter Future” budget
Albany, NY – The state’s charter school membership and advocacy association today applauded the NYS Senate for including charter schools' access to the state building aid program in its budget proposal. Half of the state’s charter schools, including 40 percent of the charter schools in New York City, are denied access to state facilities funding. They are the only public schools in the state that are denied this state aid.
The chamber's one-house budget increases next year's per-pupil charter school amount by $150 over the Governor's proposed $75 increase. This amounts to a proposed total per-pupil increase of $225. The Senate budget also includes the Governor's proposal to lift the charter school cap.
Northeast Charter Schools Network CEO Kyle Rosenkrans said, “We are thrilled to see that the State Senate wants to deliver much-needed relief to our state’s charter schools. Charter school children statewide – from the Bronx to Buffalo -- have been the most chronically underfunded public school students for years. This budget proposal is a huge step toward bridging the equality gap between charter school children and district school children and will truly make the future brighter for students statewide.
We are optimistic that state lawmakers can work together in the coming weeks to make these proposals a reality for the tens of thousands of charter school children who desperately need them.”
