Charter Association Responds to State Board of Education Renewal Recommendations for Four Public Charter Schools

New Haven, CT – The Northeast Charter Schools Network today issued the following statement after the State Board of Education recommended renewals for four public charter schools at the May 2 public meeting.

Northeast Charter Schools Network Connecticut State Director Yam Menon said, "We are pleased that the charters for these schools have been renewed, and we believe wholeheartedly in the importance of a strong charter policy environment inclusive of transparency and accountability. As a result of these renewals, families will continue to be able to send their children to these schools.

"It is equally important for our state’s leaders to consider the many successes of our state’s charters, as well as the unique needs of the students and communities they serve when making these recommendations. Among the schools recommended for renewals with limitations are schools that serve more special education students than their host district and the state average, schools that employ trauma-sensitive, emotionally-responsive practices to meet student needs, and a school that was identified as a School of Distinction just last year for academic performance and improvement. While we understand and encourage the need for oversight, these schools also deserve a chance to work on their areas of improvement.

"Over the years, we have seen our state’s public charter schools answer the State Board of Education’s call, band together and successfully improve outcomes for students. We stand ready to support these schools as they too seek out ways to better serve their students."

About the Northeast Charter Schools Network: The Northeast Charter Schools Network is the membership and advocacy organization for the more than 300 charter schools in New York and Connecticut. Its mission is to support and expand high quality charter schools.
