Connecticut Charter School Association Responds to Release of Two-Year Bipartisan State Budget

New Haven, CTThe Northeast Charter Schools Network today sent the following statement in response to the passing of a two-year bipartisan state budget, following a nearly 118-day stalemate.

Northeast Charter Schools Network Chief Executive Officer Janeene Freeman said, "By no means is this budget perfect, and there are no true winners under this plan. But thanks to the tireless advocacy of Connecticut’s charter public school community, our kids won’t have to suffer damaging cuts that could have brought incredible harm to already vulnerable communities. By protecting grade growth at existing charter schools, real kids in real classrooms will be able to stay and grow with the schools they've chosen. We also know that under this budget, some of our state's most vulnerable populations will be grappling with devastating cuts. But for the children who are thriving in charter public schools, many of whom are themselves vulnerable, protecting them from further harm and investing in what's already working was the right thing for our lawmakers to do.

"This budget doesn't begin to address solutions for the nearly 7,000 names on charter school waitlists. But in light of these challenging fiscal times, we're thankful that our schools and our kids won't see any further harm. We stand ready to work with lawmakers on solutions that will benefit all of Connecticut's kids."

About the Northeast Charter Schools Network: The Northeast Charter Schools Network is the membership and advocacy organization for the more than 250 charter schools in New York and Connecticut. Its mission is to support and expand high quality charter schools.
