CONNECTICUT CHARTER SCHOOL ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS PARENT PLAINTIFFS DEMANDING ACCESS TO BETTER PUBLIC SCHOOL OPTIONS
Federal lawsuit Martinez v. Malloy Challenges State Laws That Limit Connecticut Families’ Access to Quality Schools

New Haven, CT – The Northeast Charter Schools Network today sent the following statement in support of the Connecticut families and the non-profit group Students Matter who have filed a federal lawsuit demanding access to better public school options.

The lawsuit challenges the state laws that restrict access to high-quality public school options. As a result of these restrictions, thousands of children – mostly poor children and children of color – have been left behind. The families involved in this lawsuit have tried to send their children to charter or magnet schools but there are simply not enough of them to meet the increasing need and demand.

Northeast Charter Schools Network Connecticut Policy Manager Christopher Harrington said, “It should not matter a child’s ZIP code, their race, or the amount of money his or her parents make – that child is entitled to a great education. Right now, that is not the case for all of Connecticut’s children. In fact there are unnecessary barriers in place that are keeping great options at bay – including the fact that the state has not even been willing to release an RFP for more charter schools.

“Within the past year, the waitlist to get into a charter school in Connecticut jumped by over 60 percent to nearly 6,000 names. It’s unacceptable to us that children languish on waitlists. We support the families in this lawsuit and look forward to a victory for them and all of the other families who are stuck waiting for better schools for their children.”

About the Northeast Charter Schools Network: The Northeast Charter Schools Network is the membership and advocacy organization for the more than 250 charter schools in New York and Connecticut. Its mission is to support and expand high quality charter schools.
