Analysis: Connecticut Charter Schools Continue to Outpace District Schools in State Testing
New Haven, CT – The Northeast Charter Schools Network today congratulated Connecticut charter schools for continuing to improve and outpace their host school districts in the state Smarter Balanced tests. The Connecticut State Department of Education released the results of the tests, which show continued growth in the charter school sector.
Northeast Charter Schools Network Connecticut State Director Jeremiah Grace responded, saying, "The second year of Smarter Balanced test results are in, and there is promising news for charters. Overall, charter schools' scores were higher this year than last year. Their rate of improvement was also better than their host districts' and about on par with the state's growth. Seventy one percent of charters outperformed their districts in math and 82 percent outperformed in ELA. This is great news for thousands of families across Connecticut.
"There are some schools that knocked it out of the park. For instance, one of the state’s newest charter schools, Brass City, is the state's highest performing charter with 82 percent proficiency in both math and ELA. In its first year of testing, it outperformed the state average by leaps and bounds.
"There is still room for growth and improvement. One of the great benefits of public charter schools is their flexibility. They have the ability to innovate and bring education to families in new ways – and can adapt and change for the benefit of their students. This is why parent demand continues to grow each year.”
