Hartford, CT – Connecticut’s State Board of Education voted today to renew the charters of six charter schools across Connecticut. The renewal, which is part of the accountability system for public charter schools in the state, can be granted through either a three or five-year charter.
This is the first year in which the State Board of Education is using a new accountability framework to guide the renewal process. You can read more about the renewal framework here
“We are proud to continue educating children in the New London area, as well as continuing to partner with the local school districts,” said David Howes, principal and acting director of the Interdistrict School for Arts and Communication (ISAAC).
“We’re looking forward to serving more New Haven students over the next five years,” said Lizanne Cox, Director of Common Ground High School.
“This process makes it clear: charter schools are the most accountable public schools there are,” said Jeremiah Grace, State Director for the Northeast Charter Schools Network. “Unlike any other public school, if charter schools don’t perform well, they are closed. The fact that all six schools were renewed today is evidence that our state's public charter schools are strong and deserve to grow.”
The six schools that were renewed are:
Common Ground High School, New Haven – Founded 1997
Interdistrict School for the Arts and Communication, New London – Founded 1997
Odyssey Community School, Manchester – Founded 1997
Explorations Charter School, Winsted – Founded 1997
New Beginnings Family Academy, Bridgeport – Founded 2002
Stamford Academy, Stamford – Founded 2004
