MEDIA ADVISORY FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 12: Governor Dannel P. Malloy to Receive 2018 Torchbearer Award at Charter Awareness Day Celebration
Hartford, CT – The Northeast Charter Schools Network will present the 2018 Torchbearer Award to Governor Dannel P. Malloy on Thursday, April 12 in appreciation for his tireless work on behalf of the state’s public charter school students, families and educators. The award ceremony is the culminating highlight of the network’s 4th annual Charter Awareness Day taking place that morning, which will see students, families, educators and representatives from the state’s public charter school community descend upon Nathan Hale Hall for a day of celebration and advocacy.
"Since Governor Malloy first took office, we have seen his clear commitment to improving our state’s educational system, and in increasing high-quality educational options for Connecticut’s most underserved communities," says Northeast Charter Schools Network Connecticut State Director Yam Menon. "There is no doubt that thanks to Governor Malloy’s leadership and support, our state’s public charter schools have experienced a stronger climate to best serve our kids and families. We are honored to present him with this well-deserved symbol of our appreciation."
Thursday’s event will include opportunities for media to speak directly with students and parents, as well as school leaders. Engaged charter parents will be delivering hundreds of handwritten letters from charter parents across the state, asking lawmakers to enact a fair and comprehensive funding formula that includes public schools of choice, including charters. The event will conclude with the Torchbearer Award ceremony at 11:45 a.m., during which Menon will deliver remarks, then introduce Governor Malloy to accept the award.
