The roll-out of the Common Core state standards has affected all NY charter schools in many ways, including new state tests that have been aligned to reflect the rigor and intensity of college and career readiness for the first time in 2013.
As a member of PARCC, New York will continue to see changes to the state testing program, with yet another set of assessments expected to be effective in 2014-15. The adoption of the PARCC assessments will not be without some interesting twists and turns along the way; Chancellor Tisch has publicly expressed her concern that NY will find it challenging to accept a cut score that is also acceptable to the other states.
With these developments in mind, the 2012 round-up from Curriculum Matters is particularly interesting and informative (Top Curriculum Matters Posts of 2012). Nine of the top ten posts for the year focused on either the Common Core or test consortiums, ranging from teachers’ readiness to teach the new standards to a comparison of human versus AI scoring. And stay tuned for more to come in 2013!
