June 2018 State Board of Education Meeting Recap
Today the State Board of Education (SBE) held its regularly scheduled meeting for the month of June. One agenda item was the approval of the charter management organization (CMO) contract for Stamford Academy. The full resolution of this action item can be found here.
Stamford Academy is a state charter school located in Stamford, Connecticut that opened in 2004, and its mission is to serve undercredited and underperforming over-aged youth through trauma-sensitive and emotionally based practices to meet student needs. The SBE recently approved Stamford Academy’s charter at last month’s meeting, and in this meeting it sought official approval of its contract for whole school management services with its CMO, Domus Kids Inc. The contract’s term coincides with the charter term of one year.
Domus is a human service nonprofit organization that opened in 1972 and serves more than 1,100 students in Stamford. Domus established itself as a CMO in 2012 and currently serves both Stamford Academy and Trailblazers charter schools. The Domus contract with Stamford Academy was reviewed by the State Department of Education, including legal counsel and the Office of Internal Audit, to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Connecticut General Statutes.
In addition to approving the CMO contract for Stamford Academy, during the public participation section of the meeting we heard from a few participants from Path Academy. The principal of Path Academy, a current Path Academy educator, and Path’s board chair testified in support of the school, including specifically on the unique student body the school serves, progress the school has made in improving school performance, and the importance of the school to its student body. They also discussed the improvements the school is making as well as their future plans and for an opportunity to implement those. The SBE will convene a special board meeting on June 19th to further discuss the school and revocation proceedings.
Stay tuned for addition updates as the next SBE meeting will be held in less than two weeks. As always, please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions.
