CHARTER ASSOCIATION FIGHTS BACK AGAINST MISREPRESENTATION FROM ERIE COUNTY TEACHERS’ UNION REP IN RECENT NEWS STORY; PRESS CONFERENCE TUESDAY TO REPLY TO EGREGIOUS LIES ABOUT SCHOOL CHOICE AND BUFFALO EDUCATION REFORMERS

Buffalo, NY – The Northeast Charter Schools Network today announced a press conference for Tuesday, February 14 at 11am where Northeast Charter Schools Network Western New York Advocacy Manager Duncan Kirkwood and Buffalo District Parent Coordinating Council President Sam Radford will respond to pervasive lies spread by teachers’ unions representatives in Erie County.

WHO: Northeast Charter Schools Network WNY Advocacy Manager Duncan Kirkwood, who also serves as the Buffalo Chapter President of the Black Lives Matter Movement; Sam Radford, President of the Buffalo District Parent Coordinating Council; representatives from Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School (BASCS)

WHAT: Press conference to fight charter school and school choice lies and misconceptions; response to local opinion piece in local media spread by teachers’ union representative

WHERE: Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School (BASCS), 190 Franklin St, Buffalo, NY 14202

WHEN: Tuesday, February 14, 2016 at 11am

WHY: Joe Cantafio is president of the Erie County Council of Teacher Union Presidents and a board member of the National Education Association for New York State. He recently wrote an opinion piece in the Buffalo News, which included inaccuracies about local charter schools, as well as personal attacks on Duncan Kirkwood and Sam Radford. Kirkwood and Radford will use this time to set the record straight on school choice and their own work as education advocates. Kirkwood, leader of the Buffalo chapter of the Black Lives Matter movement, is a graduate of Buffalo City Schools and is now a parent of children who attend a Buffalo charter school who believes school choice should not just be for the wealthy and privileged. Radford has spent more than a decade working to improve the local school system for families in Buffalo.
