MEDIA ADVISORY FOR TUESDAY, MARCH 28: New Haven Charter School at Risk of Losing Grades Under Gov.’s Budget Demands Fairness, Ability to Grow

New Haven, CT -- Parents, students, educators and school leaders from Booker T. Washington Academy (BTWA), a public charter school in New Haven, will come together on Tuesday, March 28 to demand fairness from Governor Dannel Malloy, as well as the heads of the Appropriations Committee, as the proposed budget would prevent the school from growing past the 3rd grade.

Booker T. Washington Academy launched in 2014 and currently serves grades K-3. Under its state-approved charter, BTWA has plans to continue to add grades each year until it is a Pre K - 8 school. BTWA recently moved into a new building which has the capacity to support this growth, but Gov. Malloy’s proposed budget won’t allow this school to grow. This means that 3rd graders who had been promised the chance to stay with their school would have to look elsewhere for 4th grade.

**There will be video and still photo opportunities with impacted students and parents, school leaders and NECSN leadership, as well as throughout the school**

WHO: Booker T. Washington Academy parents, students, school leaders and community members, as well as the Northeast Charter Schools Network staff
