NEW YORK STATE CHARTER SCHOOL ASSOCIATION RESPONDS TO UFT ALLEGATIONS
Albany, NY – The Northeast Charter Schools Network today responded to allegations made by UFT President Michael Mulgrew about charter schools’ staff admissions policies.
Northeast Charter Schools Network New York State Director Claudia Granados said, "The ‘charter insiders’ this new policy benefits are teachers, some of whom are UFT members themselves. Mike Mulgrew is attacking the very profession he is supposed to defend. I guess in his book charter teachers aren't members of ‘one’ New York. It is telling, but not surprising, that he is protesting charters instead of trying to figure out how to improve district schools.
“For the UFT to claim that charter schools aren’t serving the neediest children is demonstrably untrue. The bottom line is this: charter schools educate all children regardless of their circumstances. The overwhelming majority of charter school students in New York are low-income children of color. They are public schools and they are open to all.”
About the Northeast Charter Schools Network: The Northeast Charter Schools Network is the membership and advocacy organization for the more than 250 charter schools in New York and Connecticut. Its mission is to support and expand high quality charter schools.
