New schools to meet huge parent demand for better options

Albany, NY – The State University of New York Charter Schools Committee today approved 17 new schools in New York City.

Kyle Rosenkrans, Interim President of the Northeast Charter Schools Network, said:

“Parents are demanding better educational options for their children and SUNY is stepping up to meet that demand by approving these new schools. Charters are showing the way to improve education for all children, particularly those in underperforming district schools.

“SUNY’s action is a bold step toward expanding opportunities and quality options for children and their families, not restricting them.

“We call on local district school administrators and their charter-hostile allies to open their eyes to the opportunities these new schools will provide children in their areas. Only then is there any chance they will learn from the methods charters are employing to raise student performance and provide the hope that every parent has for his or her children.

“This growth would not have been possible without the law passed earlier this year to guarantee space for growing and expanding charters in New York City. But more remains to be done. Leaders who want to provide these new options in such struggling cities as Buffalo and Rochester are hamstrung by laws that deny them public funding for facilities. And the dozens of charters already in private space in New York City – some 40% of the schools in the city – receive zero help from the reforms passed earlier this year.

“This is why we’ve joined with parents to sue the state over an unconstitutional funding scheme that hits the hardest on poor and minority children. On behalf of these parents and all parents, we will continue to push for laws that make a great school an option to all children.”
