Northeast Charter Schools Network responds to NAACP report on charter schools

Albany, NY – The Northeast Charter Schools Network (NECSN) today sent the following statement in response to the NAACP’s report on charter schools. NECSN is the advocacy and membership association for New York and Connecticut charter schools.

Northeast Charter Schools Network CEO Janeene Freeman said, “The NAACP has a long and proud history of standing up for civil rights, hope, and a brighter future for people of color. But the calls recently to halt charter school growth stand at odds with that legacy.

"Bad schools, generational poverty, and systemic racism have been accepted as the norm in low-income communities of color for far too long. Having access to a high-quality education is perhaps the single most powerful anti-poverty tool these families have. The NAACP understands that, and as such, makes some recommendations we agree with in its report. We all agree that strong accountability and high-quality schools are a must for all children.

"But, to deny or limit the ability for Black families to have choice in education serves only to harm the very children and families the NAACP vows to protect. Charter schools are giving power to Black families across the nation who are demanding a better education and better future for their children, and who are choosing charter schools in droves. In fact, demand continues to grow with thousands of names on waitlists in both New York and Connecticut as well as nationwide. Together, we should be working to provide more opportunities for Black children, not limit their choices in education.

“We don't necessarily agree with all of the NAACP's findings, but it doesn't mean we stop working. We will continue to work in New York and Connecticut so that families have the ability to choose a high-quality charter school, and that all children have access to a great public education. Our families, our children and our future depend on it.”
