NORTHEAST CHARTER SCHOOLS NETWORK BLASTS GEORGIA FEDERATION OF TEACHERS PRESIDENT'S HATE SPEECH
Albany, NY – Kyle Rosenkrans, CEO of the Northeast Charter Schools Network, today issued the following statement in response to Georgia Federation of Teachers President Verdaillia Turner’s comment that calling Atlanta a school “choice friendly” city is “like saying Chicago is the most murder friendly city in the nation.” Story here: http://www.myajc.com/news/news/local-education/atlanta-among-the-most-friendly-in-us-to-charter-s/npgHq/
“Ms. Turner’s comments amount to Trump-like hate speech. She’s either totally ignorant of the plight of parents who want choices for their children or hopelessly blinded by special interest partisanship. Either way, her statement is stunningly offensive and shows a mindset incapable of holding new ideas.
"Overwhelmingly, charters serve children who live in the very communities ravaged for decades by violent crime — in New York City, Detroit, Bridgeport, Newark, Chicago, Atlanta and many other cities across our country. It’s shameful that Ms. Turner is so blinded by her narrow special interest that she cannot see how charters are giving life and hope to hundreds of thousands of families who must deal with the threat of violence in their neighborhoods every day.
"We urge teachers union leaders across the Northeast and the rest of the nation to denounce Ms. Turner’s Trump-like hate speech or, by your silence, acknowledge that you agree with her that school choice is akin to homicide.”
