September 5th State Board Meeting Recap
Today the State Board of Education (SBE) held its regular monthly meeting. The full agenda for today’s meeting can be found here.
One item of note included the transfering of funds to Windham Public Schools to support its intake of students from Path Academy prior to Path surrendering its charter in July. The Board approved Windham Public Schools to receive a transfer of $400,000 to provide funding to support the expansion and development of appropriate programming for these former Path Academy students. The $400,000 will be transferred from an anticipated surplus of estimated funding in the Commissioner’s Network Account.
Other agenda items included the State Board of Education initiating a complaint with the City of Ansonia due to failing to meet its minimum budget requirement (MBR) for the current fiscal year. The MBR requires that a municipality’s appropriation for education be at least equal to the appropriation made the prior fiscal year; of which the City of Ansonia failed to provide the Ansonia Board of Education in the amount of $600,000. The Connecticut State Department of Education will conduct an investigation where it will determine whether or not to dismiss the matter or proceed with a hearing. The SBE also approved turnaround plans for two schools in the Commissioners Network - Windham High School and Wexler-Grant Community School (New Haven).
Stay tuned for additional updates. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
