Statement on Connecticut Charter School Accountability Study

New Haven, CT -- Today, the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) released a study ranking state charter school authorizers against NACSA's authorization standards.

Jeremiah Grace, Connecticut State Director for the Northeast Charter Schools Network, said:

"Connecticut's charter school law is 20 years old and is no longer state-of-the art. We have released comprehensive recommendations on modernizing Connecticut's charter law, to make it possible for more children to have access to a great school. And to ensure charter schools are overseen effectively and transparently."

Our recommendations included:
  • New digital transparency laws that require charter school board meeting schedules, agendas and minutes to be posted online;
  • Strong performance frameworks to judge the capacity and academic results of charter schools on a regular basis;
  • Clear accountability contracts that set forth the rights and responsibilities of the state and the charter school; and
  • Mandatory criminal background checks for all charter school board members and employees (current law is not clear regarding employees).

"As our state leaders move to update our charter law, we hope they focus on what's most important: giving students a great school. As Connecticut updates its law, we hope it remains firm to the essential bargain of a charter school, which is greater flexibility for the unprecedented accountability taxpayers deserve. This is the best way to give parents and children quality educational choices."

"We look forward to working with the state to improve Connecticut's charter law, while also supporting charter students and ensuring public charter schools continue to grow and thrive in the Constitution State."
