MEDIA ADVISORY FOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6: Explorations Charter School families, students, and educators to meet with legislators for breakfast and school tour
New Haven, CT – Charter school students, families and educators from Explorations Charter School in Winsted will welcome legislators to their school for a breakfast, a tour of the school, and first-hand testimonials about why school choice is so critically important to Connecticut families.
Explorations, one of Connecticut's first public charter schools, serves 90 students in grades 9-12 who hail from 12 different towns. Transportation is a major challenge for Explorations. More than half of the student population resides outside the host district, yet most towns provide no public transportation to and from the school. Explorations therefore pays for its own bus service for students residing in Litchfield, Thomaston and Torrington. Families and educators will have a chance to speak face-to-face with lawmakers about those challenges and others that charter families face.
At Thursday's event, there will be opportunities for the media to speak directly with students and families, as well as local and elected officials, regarding the unique challenges facing the students of Explorations Charter School. There will also be video and still photo opportunities throughout the school and inside classrooms.
WHO: Explorations Charter School community, along with the Northeast Charter Schools Network staff. Invitees include local and state elected officials from Winsted and the greater Torrington area comprised of Canton, Simsbury, Granby, Goshen and Litchfield; this includes the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Education.
WHAT: Legislative breakfast with charter families
WHERE: Explorations Charter School. 71 Spencer St. Winsted, CT 06098
WHEN: Breakfast begins at 8 a.m., followed by a school tour, remarks and a Q&A session from 9:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
